marketing. She also developed the Student Services Center and improved campus facilities while maintaining a balanced budget. Before Alma, Tracy was vice president of academic affairs at Mount Union College and held various academic leadership roles. With numerous publications on leadership and performance assessment, she later worked as a consultant for AGB Search. Tracy has a B.A. from Carroll, a M.Ed. from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. James R. Starling, M.D. ’65 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement: College of Health Sciences James R. Starling, M.D., has dedicated his life to surgery and teaching future surgeons. He studied biology at Carroll and spent a year abroad at the American University of Beirut. After earning his medical degree from the University of Rochester in 1969, he completed surgical residencies at the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina. Starling served as a surgeon and professor at the University of Iowa, then at the University of Wisconsin, where he became chief of surgery. He has authored over 140 publications, received numerous awards, and participated in major surgical societies. In retirement, he has conducted 12 medical missions to Palestine, Panama, Haiti and Ecuador. David Melvin Molthen, M.A. ’63 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement: College of Arts & Sciences David Melvin Molthen, M.A. ‘63, dedicated his career to advancing student learning and theatre education at Carroll. After graduating in 1963, he taught English, speech, and drama at Waterford Union High School and directed 12 productions. In 1970, he became a theatre arts professor at Carroll, later chairing the department for 20 of his 34 years there. Molthen led the creation of the Otteson Theatre and directed 35 mainstage productions. He internationalized Carroll’s theatre program with exchanges and tours. Molthen was also involved in establishing high school teacher certification standards in Wisconsin. After retiring in 2004, he was granted professor emeritus status and received several awards for his contributions. Samantha L. González ’20 2024 Graduate Of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D.) Award Samantha L. González is a pioneering healthcare professional and community activist. At Carroll University, she majored in Spanish and nursing, minored in psychology, and participated in various extracurricular activities. Upon graduation, she worked in a COVID ICU, specializing in cardiopulmonary medicine, and became a nursing lab assistant at Carroll. Currently, she is a pediatric nurse at Children’s Wisconsin Hospital while pursuing a Master of Science in nursing to become a neonatal nurse practitioner. A first-generation Mexican-American, González is active in the National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives and has received numerous awards for her leadership and advocacy. Her dedication to healthcare equity and social justice underscores her impactful career.
